Virginia Military Institute Old and New Barracks Windows Replacement, Lexington, VA

Grunley has been awarded a CM at Risk contract to provide preconstruction and construction services for the replacement of the historic windows in Virginia Military Institute’s (VMI’s) Old and New Barracks. These barracks buildings were designated a National Historic Landmark in 1966 and house the Corps of Cadets and administrative spaces for the Commandant’s Staff, the Guard Team, Cadet Government, Emergency Medical staff, Armory, and other cadet activities. This large and technically complex project will be performed in a historically and culturally sensitive location and will comprise 793 windows and 271 openings over six stories. The historic windows lack flashing, which has led to water entrapment and ultimately heavy deterioration of the window openings. The windows are a contributing typology to the National Historic Landmark status of the barracks and the project must adhere to strict, unique standards for replacement. The project will take place in a high visibility location, immediately adjacent to VMI’s Drill Field, requiring collaborative coordination and planning. The Old and New Barracks will be at least partially occupied for the entire duration of the project.
