On Wednesday, August 14th, Grunley was pleased to take part in the topping out ceremony for the Pentagon Control Tower and Fire Day Station project in Arlington, Virginia. The ceremony opened with remarks from Ken Terry, Grunley’s Vice President and Operations Manager; Lieutenant Colonel Mark Pollak, Deputy District Commander of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Baltimore District; Robert Salesses, Deputy Director of Washington Headquarters Services and Acting Director of Facilities Services Directorate; and Nate Barnes, Grunley’s Assistant Project Manager. After a barbeque lunch, attendees climbed 67 stairs to the control tower cab, enjoying unparalleled views and permanently signing their names under what will be a raised access floor.

The $21.1 million design-build project with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Baltimore District will deliver a new permanent facility that provides mission-critical support for the Pentagon heliport. Replacing the original structures destroyed during the events of 9/11 and the temporary facilities erected as part of the Phoenix Project, the new complex will feature a dual Air Traffic Control and Fire Day Station facility. This state-of-the-art station will include three connected structures: the Apparatus Bay, the Administrative Building, and the Air Traffic Control (ATC) Tower. It will also house an administrative suite with a supervisor office, a general office, an ATC team room, and two high-bays for emergency vehicles. The Pentagon Control Tower and Fire Day Station project is expected to reach substantial completion in December 2024.
