Grunley Superintendent Featured on the TODAY Show

Grunley’s Lead Superintendent assigned to the Washington Monument Earthquake Repair project, Steve Monroe, was interviewed by Al Roker from the TODAY Show as part of his coverage for the Monument re-opening. The three-minute long segment about the reopening of the Washington Monument can be viewed by clicking onto the following link: The TODAY Show. Be sure to watch until the very end to catch Steve Monroe’s closing comments.

On May 12, 2014, the Washington Monument reopened to the public following almost three years of extensive repair work. The monument had been closed to the public since August 23, 2011, when a 5.8 magnitude earthquake damaged the structure, requiring significant repairs. Grunley has been an integral team member to Perini Management since the earthquake damage repair project got underway.

A reopening ceremony was held on the southwest grounds of the Washington Monument. Co-Anchor of the TODAY Show, Al Roker, served as the Master of Ceremonies. He was joined by special guests including Secretary of the Department of the Interior, Sally Jewell; National Park Service Director, Jonathan B. Jarvis; philanthropist and Co-Founder/Co-CEO of The Carlyle Group, David M. Rubenstein; and National Mall and Memorial Parks Superintendent Robert A. Vogel.

Additionally, the ceremony included beautiful patriotic musical performances by the United States Navy Ceremonial Band; the Boy and Girl Choristers of the Washington National Cathedral Choir; and 2013 American Idol Winner, Candice Glover. The ceremony concluded with the ribbon cutting in which the special guests were joined by the District of Columbia’s Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes Norton and Mayor Vincent C. Gray.

Congratulations to Grunley’s entire Washington Monument project team for doing such an outstanding job and getting this project completed on time and within budget!
