Bicycle Transit Center

Grunley constructed the Union Station Bicycle Transit Center, a 1,600 SF bicycle garage which offers secure storage for 130 bikes as well as a changing room, small bike shop and bike rental area. This architecturally signicant design is the first structure of its kind locally. The facility sits right above a Metro tunnel. To accommodate the tunnel, the 150' x 30' Bicycle Tran­sit Center has a shallow, horizontal foundation. Echoing a bicycle wheel’s elegance and efficiency, arched steel tubes are stabilized by a series of “spokes” or stainless steel tie rods in order to lighten up the structure. An energy efficient “skin” optimizes transparency while further moderating temperature. Further minimizing heat gain, denser graduated ceramic frit low-e glazing, opens up progressively to views of the plaza level.
